WhatsApp Introduces On-Device Message Translation

25 Sep 2025

In a move to facilitate ease of communication across language barriers, WhatsApp is introducing message translations for both Android and iPhone users. With this new feature, users can simply long-press a message received in a different language and tap the 'Translate' option. This allows users to select their preferred language for translation, while also offering the option to download the translation functionality for future use.

Privacy-Focused Translation Technology

Ensuring user privacy remains at the forefront of this development. WhatsApp has designed the translations to be performed on-device, aligning with its emphasis on maintaining the confidentiality of user communications. This approach means that messages are processed directly on users’ phones, ensuring greater security compared to cloud-based alternatives.

Android users will benefit from an additional feature that enables automatic translations for entire chats, enhancing the app's usability for individuals who are regularly engaged in multilingual conversations. Upon initial rollout, Android supports six languages—English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. Meanwhile, iPhone users will have access to a more expansive range with support for over 19 languages from the onset.

Broadening Communication in Various Settings

The translation feature is versatile, as it can be enabled in a variety of contexts within WhatsApp, including one-on-one chats, group chats, and Channel updates. This capability marks a significant step forward in how users can interact with international contacts and access diverse content easily.

The introduction of message translation follows a series of enhancements that WhatsApp has recently implemented. These include privacy-centric tools like Meta AI chat summaries and group-join previews, which are crucial for preventing scams and providing users with a safer chatting experience.

WhatsApp’s continuous commitment to evolving its services while prioritizing user security and privacy showcases its dedication to remaining a leading platform for global communication. As language continues to be a barrier in digital interactions, the new translation feature is set to bridge gaps, making WhatsApp a more inclusive tool for users worldwide.
