Google to Introduce Native App Lock on Android 17

10 Dec 2025

Google is developing a native App Lock for Android 17, offering Pixel users a system-level method to secure individual apps using biometrics or a PIN. This functionality eliminates the need for third-party tools by integrating directly into the Android interface.

Privacy and Security Enhancements

The implementation of a built-in App Lock is aimed at enhancing privacy for users, allowing them to protect sensitive apps such as banking, messaging, and health records while maintaining accessibility for others. This development caters to the average user's interaction with various apps daily, offering a first-party solution to secure data without resorting to external applications.

According to Android Canary builds, Google plans to use a new API enabling app locking through the default home screen launcher, reinforcing security by embedding the feature within Android's core system. This approach is notably stronger than current third-party solutions, which can be less secure and easily bypassed.

Implementation and Features

The system is expected to allow app locking through a simple long-press on an app icon, locked via a system dialog similar to current biometric authentication processes using BiometricPrompt. This feature targets Android phones and tablets, not wearable devices or automotive systems.

Currently, the App Lock feature is in its nascent stages, hidden behind developer flags, with projections for a full rollout alongside Android 17's official release. Pixel devices are anticipated to forefront this feature, with potential availability for third-party launchers in the future.

Comparisons and Future Considerations

Unlike Android's "Private Space," which isolates apps in separate profiles and is less practical for everyday use, the new App Lock will facilitate ease and accessibility. This development aligns Google's offerings with existing OEM features from Samsung, OnePlus, and Xiaomi, addressing concerns about fragmentation and reinforcing Android's security suite.

While some questions remain regarding notification handling, enterprise integration, and authentication options, the anticipated App Lock is poised to significantly bolster the security landscape for Pixel users, offering more control and assurance over personal data.
