OpenAI has launched its Sora AI video generation app for Android users in the US, Canada, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. This launch follows its initial availability on iOS in September 2025, during ongoing copyright discussions.
Expansion and Features
Sora creates hyperrealistic videos from text prompts, synchronizing dialogue and sound seamlessly. The app, originally a research prototype from February 2024, later became accessible through ChatGPT for Plus and Pro subscribers in North America. The second version, Sora 2, arrived in late September 2025, enhancing motion realism and audio sync.
The Android release allows users not only to generate and remix videos but also to feature themselves in AI-crafted content. Sora's social sharing and collaboration features position it as a competitor to popular short-video platforms. Digital watermarks are included for content identification, though removal tools have already surfaced.
Legal and Market Implications
Expanding Sora to Android broadens access to advanced AI video tools, potentially fast-tracking AI’s role in media and entertainment. However, legal challenges persist over training on copyrighted material. OpenAI has responded by enabling opt-out features for rights holders.
Despite the broad rollout, Europe remains excluded over regulatory issues. This decision highlights the complex landscape of AI technology deployment across different global markets.
