Google is transitioning from Google Assistant to Gemini on Android Auto, marking the change for users starting on 2025-11-05. This shift brings enhanced language comprehension and interaction capabilities to vehicles.
Release Timing and Integration
The Gemini integration began appearing for Android Auto users on beta builds 15.6 and 15.7 as of November 5. Although this move was announced around Google I/O with a target for 'this fall,' the wider public build release date remains unspecified.
Gemini enhances interaction through natural-language processing and offers the Gemini Live feature for real-time conversational functions while driving. Users will see Gemini's interface either at the bottom or side of their screens, based on the screen's size.
Enhanced Features for Drivers
Gemini retains the "Hey Google" wake word and allows for expanded integration with Google services such as Home, Keep, Maps, and Lens. It improves user experience by translating messages in over 40 languages and offering the ability to edit translations without restarting commands. Users can initiate multi-step requests, such as beginning navigation while inquiring about restaurant hours and finding nearby gas stations.
Gemini's arrival into Android Auto is part of a broader rollout across Google platforms, already available to some users and expected to expand to more of the 250 million cars running Android Auto.
