OpenAI is testing a new Direct Messaging (DM) feature in its ChatGPT Android app beta, allowing users to engage in direct and group chats. This functionality is part of the Android beta version 1.2025.273.
Direct Messaging and Group Chats
The DM feature, internally named "Calpico," enables users to message each other directly and create "Calpico Rooms" for group conversations. The feature supports assistant participation and joint creative projects like shared text and image generation.
Users can rename assistants, block accounts, manage invitations, and collaborate in real time, enhancing ChatGPT's utility for both personal and professional use.
Privacy and Security Concerns
There are initial reports suggesting that these direct messages might not yet include end-to-end encryption (E2EE). OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously hinted at plans to implement "AI privilege," which would involve stronger privacy protections. The DM feature might be an early step toward a multi-functional app that integrates collaboration, commerce, and hardware.
