Android users rejoicing over a nostalgic return to PlayStation 2 games have new reasons to celebrate with the latest update for NetherSX2. Version 2.1 brings significant performance improvements along with crucial fixes for some of the most beloved PS2 titles including Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence.
The update corrects visual regressions that had crept in with the previous version. Players can now experience seamless gameplay not only in the mentioned classics but also in the popular Jak series, thanks to specific enhancements targeting those games. Moreover, the update does not neglect importance in compatibility and graphical quality, offering updated widescreen and no-interlacing patches.
Enhanced Compatibility with Controller Updates
Furthermore, updated to ship with the latest Controller DB, version 2.1 enhances its ability to work with a variety of input devices, ensuring that users can have an intuitive and smooth in-game control experience. Gamers need not worry about any disconnects or non-responsiveness when diving into their favorite titles.
Options for Different Devices
Taking into account the diverse range of Android devices, NetherSX2 provides two distinct builds in this update. Build 4248, based on a newer AetherSX2 version, is advised for most players and is well-suited for handling games utilizing the Snowblind engine, such as Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance. It enhances functionality not only for those but also for Ace Combat and Jak games.
On the other hand, users operating on older Mali devices might find Build 3668 more compatible. Rooted in an older AetherSX2 version, this build addresses issues specific to such hardware, particularly in NASCAR and Colin McRae Rally games. It adeptly remedies rendering difficulties and resolves Vulkan crashes, ensuring a stable gaming experience on older setups.
Limitations and Future Developments
However, prospective users should note that neither build currently supports texture packs from 2024 or later due to changes in the naming conventions of dumped textures by PCSX2. Additionally, given that NetherSX2 originates from a closed-source project, comprehensive overhauls are not possible; only minor optimizations can be implemented for now.
While the community keeps an eye on the developing PCSX2 port for Android, which is still in its nascent stages, NetherSX2 remains the superior choice for PS2 emulation on this platform. Downloads remain accessible through GitHub, requiring users to choose between the two builds since only one can be installed at a time. Importantly, save files from one version are not transferable to the other.
