Google Home Adds Single-Tap Transfer for Nest Devices

19 Dec 2025

Google has introduced a single-tap transfer feature in the Google Home app to facilitate the transfer of Nest devices. This update, added on 2023-12-10, initially serves users enrolled in the Public Preview program.

Improved Device Migration

The updated Google Home app supports seamless transfers for various Nest devices, including cameras, thermostats, locks, and smoke alarms released in 2015 or later. The feature enables users to migrate supported devices from the Nest app to Google Home with a single tap.

However, the initiation of this transfer process still requires access to the Nest app. This dual-app dependency, while innovative, could limit wider adoption until a full rollout occurs.

Current Limitations

Currently, the single-tap transfer feature is only available to users in the Google Home Public Preview program. As this feature is in its pre-release stage, users may experience occasional glitches.

The absence of a specified timeline from Google for a broad release extends uncertainty for users reliant on all Nest features. Waiting might be prudent for those users until comprehensive availability is ensured.

Program Participation and Future Prospects

Participation in the Google Home Public Preview program provides early access to this new feature, offering participants a chance to explore improved migration ease. As Google continues to signal advances in device integration, the company aims to enhance user experience in home automation.

For general users not enlisted in the program, anticipation remains for a potential feature rollout, reflecting Google's cautious but progressive technological tailwind in enhancing the smart home ecosystem.
