WhatsApp Beta Tests Motion Photos with Audio Support

22 Aug 2025

WhatsApp is bringing a new dynamic to photo sharing with its latest feature in the Android beta that supports motion photos. This innovative feature was identified in the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.22.29, available to a select group of beta testers. Motion photos, which capture brief movement and audio before and after the snapshot, are set to enrich the visual storytelling experience on the platform.

Users familiar with motion images from devices such as Samsung and Google's Pixel Top Shot will find this feature especially appealing. These motion photos, replete with movement and sound, offer a more vivid representation of the captured moments. To use this feature, WhatsApp users will note a new play-button-in-ring icon in the image selection interface, providing an intuitive method to send images as motion photos.

WhatsApp's implementation includes supporting audio within these motion photos, adding an extra layer of immersion to shared images. This update helps differentiate from traditional still images and videos, aligning closer to authentic moment captures. Notably, this update allows recipients to view motion photos irrespective of their device's native capture capability.

Enhancing User Privacy

While Motion photos extend the application's multimedia capabilities, WhatsApp is also reportedly exploring usernames as a more private alternative to sharing phone numbers. This yet-to-be-fully-disclosed feature could mark a significant shift in user privacy and identity verification on the platform, embracing a trend towards more secure communication.

It's important to note that WABetaInfo was the earliest to report on these developments, highlighting WhatsApp's ongoing efforts to innovate user experience and security. However, WhatsApp has not announced when these features will be publicly available beyond the beta phase. Enthusiasts and general users alike await further news on a broader rollout.
