OpenAI's ChatGPT Android app is poised for expansion beyond its single-user focus with a new direct messaging feature. Discovered in the app's 1.2025.273 beta version, this feature is internally referred to as Calpico.
New Messaging Features
The Calpico functionality suggests the integration of direct messaging, allowing users to initiate one-on-one conversations and group chats, known as Calpico Rooms. Users will be able to change usernames and profile images at any time. Notifications will alert users when someone joins a chat or sends a message, even when the app is not actively used.
Profile and Sharing Capabilities
The updated profile features will support the new messaging capabilities by allowing profile image changes and username customizations. These enhancements aim to position ChatGPT as a more socially oriented application.
- ChatGPT Android app will support direct 1:1 and group messages.
- Profile image and username changes will enhance user experience.
- Notifications will update users on chat activities.
- Direct Messages will be accessible from the sidebar and settings.
Although the messaging feature will be robust, reports indicate it may lack end-to-end encryption at launch, raising potential privacy concerns for users.
