Google Play Store Introduces App Auto-Open Feature

27 Aug 2025

Google has been diligently working on an innovative feature for its Play Store that many Android users might appreciate. The much-anticipated auto-open feature, which has been in testing since last year, is now rolling out across a variety of devices. This feature automatically opens applications once they have been downloaded, streamlining the user experience.

Initially spotted in tests back in September last year, the auto-open functionality resurfaced in June before making its more extensive rollout recently. Android phone users have reported seeing the new toggle on flagship models such as the Galaxy Z Fold7 and the Pixel 9 Pro XL. Intriguingly, the Pixel models appear to have a slightly different user interface for this feature, suggesting some customization by Google to enhance user experience.

Features and Functionality

The auto-open toggle is designed to appear below the installation progress bar within the Google Play Store when you are downloading a new app. By default, this feature is turned off, giving users the control to choose their preferred app-launching behavior.

If you decide to enable it, the app does not launch immediately after installation. Instead, Google has introduced a thoughtful five-second countdown notification, allowing users a moment to cancel if they wish. This offers valuable flexibility, particularly for those whose downloads take some time, as they can continue with other activities without disruption until the app is ready to open.

The auto-open feature represents a significant advancement in user experience by making mobile device operations more efficient and seamless. As it becomes available on more devices, it is likely to become a popular choice for those looking to streamline their app usage further.
