Google Contacts Update Enhances Usability with Streamlined Interface

17 Sep 2024

Google Contacts is embracing a fresh look with the rollout of its new “Create contact” page, now available in version 4.39.53 of the app for Android users. This update, which has been anticipated since its preview earlier this year, brings a more streamlined and organized interface, shedding the previous clutter that often overwhelmed users.

Key Features and Enhancements

The redesigned page retains essential features such as the ability to add a profile picture, first name, last name, and company details. However, it introduces a more user-friendly approach by presenting key fields—like phone numbers and email addresses—as pill-shaped buttons. Notably, the “Add phone” option is pre-selected, yet users have the flexibility to remove it with a simple tap on a red button.

As users navigate down the page, they will encounter a text field for notes, along with a button that reveals additional options. Tapping the “Add fields” button opens a sheet that allows users to select from extra fields, including middle name, phonetic pronunciation, prefix, suffix, job title, and website, among others. This selective approach to adding fields helps maintain a clean interface, avoiding an overwhelming array of options.

The new design marks a significant improvement over its predecessor, prioritizing essential information and enhancing usability. By placing the phone number field front and center, Google acknowledges its importance as a primary detail when adding new contacts. Furthermore, the removal of icons next to each field, coupled with a centered layout, enhances visibility and ease of use.

This update is being rolled out gradually through a server-side update, ensuring that Android users can soon experience the benefits of this thoughtful redesign in their Google Contacts app.
