Google Docs on Android Introduces Dark Theme for Enhanced User Experience

30 Jun 2024

Enabling Dark Theme for Google Docs on Android

For those who prefer a darker interface, enabling the dark theme for the Android version of Google Docs is a straightforward process. Here’s how you can switch to dark mode:

  1. Open the Google Docs app on your Android phone or tablet.
  2. Tap the hamburger Menu button at the top left of the screen.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap Choose theme.
  5. Choose Dark. If you already have dark mode enabled at a system level, you can also choose System default.

Once enabled, not only will the app’s color scheme change, but any Docs files you open will also display in dark mode. This means you’ll see your document with white text on a dark background. It might seem like the document itself has had its colors altered, but rest assured, the document remains unchanged. It only appears in dark mode for users who have dark mode turned on. If you share it with someone using light mode, they’ll see it in its original colors.

Viewing Documents in Light Mode

If you prefer working with light-themed documents but enjoy the overall dark theme of the app, Google Docs offers a handy feature. You can view documents in light mode even when the app is set to dark mode. Here’s how:

  1. Open a Google Docs document in the Google Docs Android app.
  2. Tap the three dots in the top right corner to view overflow options.
  3. Tap View in light theme.

Assuming your document uses default formatting, it will be displayed with black text on a white background. The Docs app itself will remain in dark mode, and only the document will be shown in light mode. This feature allows you to enjoy the benefits of a dark-themed app while still working with light-themed documents, offering the best of both worlds.

The flexibility provided by these settings ensures that users can customize their experience to suit their preferences, making Google Docs on Android a versatile tool for both night owls and those who prefer a lighter workspace.
