Google Pixel Users Report Vanishing Text Notifications in Messages App

05 Jul 2024

Users of a popular Android brand have complained about an apparent bug that's causing havoc with their notifications. And it could mean that they're missing important messages at the blink of an eye.

Notification Bug Plagues Google Pixel Users

The issue appears to be affecting the Google Messages app. According to numerous reports from affected device owners, the alleged bug results in text notifications strangely disappearing almost immediately after they pop up, as though they've swiped the alert away. This has been raised by Google Pixel users specifically, though it's not clear how widespread the problem is. It first emerged on Reddit more than two weeks ago, but more people have come forward citing the same thing.

"When a new text arrives in Messages, the notification slides down from the top of the screen, but disappears in about a second and doesn't appear in the status bar or pull-down menu, almost as if it's been dismissed by being seen in the app itself," one user wrote.

"This super weird behavior started a couple days ago, I've been googling and checking forums and can't find anyone with the same issue recently. I've restarted the phone, cleared app storage and resynced everything, and checked the notification settings for anything weird… I can't tell why this is happening."

A third wrote: "Happened with WhatsApp messages for me quite a few times tbh. Really concerning as I might miss important messages." And one Pixel 7 Pro owner commented: "I've been having that issue for months, not seeing the little 'unread' notification icon on the lock screen sometimes, even though I was mid-conversation, I go check and apparently a message came in 5 minutes ago. Something is definitely up with the messages app notifications."

Bricking Issue for Google Pixel Users

The hassle comes as other Google Pixel fans contend with another annoying bug this week. Those with a Pixel 6, 6 Pro, or 6A have found their phones "bricking" if they attempt to do a factory reset. After taking the latest system update, affected users encounter an error message during the reset process, often mentioning “Unable to enable ext4 verity” and a missing “tune2fs” file. The phone then either gets stuck in Android Recovery mode or enters a bootloop, leaving Pixel 6, 6 Pro and PA users utterly helpless.

Google has confirmed it is looking into a fix. "To avoid this issue, we recommend leaving your device powered on and idle for 15 minutes after it has rebooted following a system update," the company wrote on its forum. "After that time you may factory reset your device." Alternatively, you can factory reset your device before taking the latest system update.

Does google messages work over wifi?

Yes, Google Messages can work over Wi-Fi for sending and receiving messages through the use of Rich Communication Services (RCS) if both sender and receiver have RCS enabled and are using Wi-Fi or mobile data. Traditional SMS/MMS messages do not require Wi-Fi and use the cellular network.

How to uninstall google messages updates?

To uninstall Google Messages updates, open the device's 'Settings' app, go to 'Apps & notifications' or 'Application Manager', find and select 'Messages', then tap the three-dot menu icon at the top right and choose 'Uninstall updates'. This will revert Google Messages to the factory version that came with your device.
