Motorola Launches Moto Tag UWB Tracker with Dedicated App Requirement

07 Aug 2024

The Find My Device network is navigating through some challenges, yet this has not deterred Motorola from unveiling its latest innovation. The company has introduced the Moto Tag, marking the debut of a UWB tracker within the network. This device also stands out as the first Find My Device tracker that necessitates the download of a separate application for full functionality.

Unlike the offerings from Chipolo and Pebblebee, which seamlessly integrate with Google’s existing Find My Device app—likely already installed on most Android devices—the Moto Tag requires users to engage with a dedicated Moto Tag app. Upon launching this app, users can easily pair their tracker and access a range of options. These include playing a sound on the tracker and launching the full Find My Device app to pinpoint the tracker’s location. Additionally, a “More” menu provides insights into the current firmware version, often prompting an out-of-the-box update, along with a toggle for the app’s critical feature: locating your phone.

Unique Features of Moto Tag

As previously highlighted by Motorola, the Moto Tag offers a convenient way to find your phone. A simple double-tap of the Tag’s button triggers a sound on the phone, provided the tracker remains within Bluetooth range. The Moto Tag app is readily available on the Play Store, making it accessible to any Android smartphone user.

While both Chipolo and Pebblebee have their own apps available on Android, they do not impose any requirement for users to download them in conjunction with their respective Find My Device trackers. This distinction places the Moto Tag in a unique position within the market.

Though Motorola does not explicitly mandate the download of the Moto Tag app, the integration of essential functions like phone location and firmware updates suggests that downloading it is advisable for users seeking to maximize their experience.

The Moto Tag is currently available for purchase at a price point of $19.99, or $69.99 for a four-pack. However, it is worth noting that the tracker’s most anticipated feature, UWB, is not yet operational.
