Google Introduces Moto Tag, First UWB Tracker for Find My Device Network

08 Aug 2024

Google's Find My Device Network Welcomes Moto Tag

Google's Find My Device network is still in its nascent stages, yet it continues to evolve with the introduction of new hardware. Enter the Moto Tag, marking its debut as the first Ultra-Wideband (UWB) tracker designed for this network. Unlike its predecessors, the Moto Tag requires users to download a dedicated app, diverging from the seamless experience offered by other Find My Device trackers such as Chipolo and Pebblebee, which operate directly through the existing Find My Device app.

Distinct Features of the Moto Tag

The Moto Tag app, while an additional download, is refreshingly straightforward. Upon launching the app, users can easily pair the tracker and access a variety of functionalities. Options include playing a sound on the tracker or launching the full Find My Device app for precise location tracking. A “More” menu provides insights into the current firmware version and includes a crucial toggle for locating your phone.

One of the standout features of the Moto Tag is its ability to assist users in finding their phones. By double-tapping the tracker’s button, a sound is triggered on the phone, provided it is within Bluetooth range. This feature adds a layer of convenience, especially for those prone to misplacing their devices.

While other trackers like Chipolo and Pebblebee also offer Android apps, they do not necessitate additional downloads for the Find My Device functionality. The Moto Tag app, although not strictly required, enhances the user experience by enabling firmware updates and the essential phone-locating feature. Hence, downloading the app seems prudent for users who wish to maximize the tracker’s capabilities.

For many, the idea of managing multiple apps for similar functions can be a source of frustration. The expectation is that the Find My Device app would encompass all necessary features, yet the Moto Tag introduces a slight complication by requiring its own app. This dual-app scenario may not sit well with users accustomed to streamlined solutions.
