Android Update Enhances Left-Right Splits for Foldable Phones

02 Jul 2024

Google's latest Android update is making waves in the tech world, particularly for users of foldable phones. The update, which supports left-right splits for foldable devices, is a significant step forward in multitasking capabilities. This feature, introduced with Android 14 QPR2 back in March, allows apps to be placed side-by-side even when the device is in portrait mode, a configuration that was previously unavailable for most Android smartphones.

Enhancing Multitasking on Foldable Phones

Traditionally, Android's split-screen mode has allowed users to place two apps either side-by-side or top-bottom, depending on the device's orientation. However, this setup didn't quite fit the bill for foldable phones with nearly square aspect ratios. Recognizing this gap, Google has updated the split-screen mode to accommodate left-right splits in portrait mode, likely in anticipation of its own upcoming Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

Rumors and leaks have strongly suggested that the Pixel 9 Pro Fold will feature a nearly square aspect ratio. The goldfish config for the Pixel Fold 2 reveals a display resolution of 2,076 x 2,152 in its default portrait orientation. To support left-right split-screen multitasking in this orientation, the config_leftRightSplitInPortrait setting needs to be enabled.

This improvement is not just a minor tweak; it represents a significant enhancement for users who rely on multitasking. With foldable phones becoming more popular, the ability to efficiently manage multiple apps simultaneously is crucial. The left-right split in portrait mode ensures that users can make the most of their device's screen real estate, regardless of its orientation.

Additional Multitasking Features

The left-right split in portrait mode is just one of the recent improvements Google has made to Android's split-screen functionality. In Android 15, the company has added the ability to save split-screen app pairs to the home screen. This feature allows users to quickly access their favorite app combinations without having to set them up each time.

Moreover, Google has been working on revamping Android's desktop mode, significantly improving freeform app windowing. This enhancement is particularly beneficial for larger screen devices like book-style foldables and tablets, providing a more desktop-like experience on mobile devices.

The upcoming Made by Google 2024 hardware event on August 13 is expected to unveil the Pixel 9 Pro Fold officially. As we await this announcement, it's clear that Google is committed to enhancing the multitasking experience on Android, especially for users of foldable phones.
