As we wrap up Friday, it comes to that time again where we cover some new releases, particularly those from indie developers. I feel it’s important to highlight those since not everyone realizes that mobile does have a pretty decent indie scene; they just tend to get drowned out by glitzy gacha and new AAA spin-offs. Today’s subject is the new bullet heaven game, The Wizard.
Wizardy
Catchy name aside, The Wizard is a premium game out now on Google Play that puts you in the shoes of a wizard tasked by Zeus to fight off the forces of Hades. To do so, you’ll need to wield the familiar flashy, rapidly upgrading weapons and spells that’ll be so familiar to fans of games like Vampire Survivors.
Now, I won’t mince words, because The Wizard is definitely rough around the edges if the blocky right-hand-side buttons are any indication. However, for an indie outing clearly working on a limited budget, it does look as if plenty of passion has gone into it, and it has all the feel of the old Flash Games that I think inspire the best kind of mobile titles.
Admittedly, I’m not sure how many actual vampires there were knocking about in ancient Greece. However, the flashy powers and spells are definitely there. I should also admit that calling it a bullet heaven may be a bit of a misnomer, as the auto-attacks which are a staple of the genre aren’t there. But the ability to mix and match spells, and have more control over your attacks—not just your movement—is sure to sway some people.
