Microsoft's Xbox Full Screen Experience (FSE), a streamlined version of Windows designed to enhance gaming performance, is now available on all Windows handheld gaming devices. Originally launched on the Xbox Ally X, FSE reduces desktop-related memory usage, freeing up about 2GB for improved device performance.
Performance and Memory Optimization
By minimizing system background tasks, FSE allocates more memory towards gaming, which is crucial for devices where the GPU and system share resources. In tests, certain games saw frame-rate improvements exceeding 10%, although outcomes varied across different titles. These enhancements make FSE an attractive option for gamers seeking better performance on handheld devices.
Interface and Usability Enhancements
The FSE introduces a D-pad-optimized interface tailored for game launchers, system settings, and app switching, all navigable through buttons. This interface aims to improve usability for handheld gamers, though it is not as extensive as SteamOS on the Steam Deck. However, it offers a significant, user-friendly alternative for device navigation without requiring touch inputs.
Availability and Future Rollout
Now accessible on a range of devices such as the ROG Ally X, Lenovo Legion Go, and MSI Claw 2, FSE is expanding through the Windows Insider program. While it won't resolve game optimization issues inherent in certain titles, its deployment marks a meaningful step in enhancing the handheld gaming experience on Windows platforms.
