Meta Platforms Inc. has launched cross-platform messaging on WhatsApp in Europe under the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA). This move enables WhatsApp users to communicate with users on other messaging platforms without switching apps.
Implementation Details
The initiative, part of a broader interoperability project starting in early 2024, is now available in its beta phase. It allows chatting with external platforms like BirdyChat through WhatsApp. Using the Signal Protocol, messages maintain end-to-end encryption, ensuring user privacy while meeting regulatory demands.
Meta's roadmap includes adding group chats by 2025 and voice/video call features by 2027. Third-party apps must undergo security reviews to integrate with WhatsApp. Users can manage or merge third-party message inboxes and have options to block unwanted messages.
Security and Compliance
Security is a priority: WhatsApp employs client-side scanning for spam and requires third-party apps to host media files independently. This minimizes infrastructure impact and enhances security. Additionally, Meta has enhanced scam protection across its platforms.
The DMA could influence global practices, with implications for other messaging services to enhance interoperability. While some praise the reduced fragmentation, others express concerns over potential vulnerabilities. The future success depends on adoption, security standards, and regulatory compliance.
