Launched as a personal weekend venture, Bitchat stands out with its commitment to privacy, simplicity, and innovative technology. This open-source application leverages Bluetooth to create a mesh network, allowing users to communicate without traditional internet, Wi-Fi, or cellular data.
By enabling each device to act as both a client and a server, Bitchat ensures that messages are transmitted across multiple hops to increase the network's extensiveness. As more individuals join and run the application, the communication range can potentially extend beyond a single Bluetooth connection, enhancing connectivity in local settings.

In terms of design, Bitchat maintains a streamlined, minimalist approach. Users don’t require contacts or phone numbers. Instead, upon opening the app, individuals can see the number of active users within their local network. Main chat messages are broadcast across the network, while private chats offer one-on-one communication.
The app accommodates minimal features such as private messaging, user blocking, and playful interactions through actions like "hug" or "slap" that manifest as messages in the chat. For transparency, Bitchat notifies users when someone enters the network or when screenshot activity is detected within the chat.
