Panels App Shutdown: What Users Need to Know

01 Dec 2025

The Panels wallpaper app will shut down at the end of this month. Users need to download desired wallpapers before the app's removal, as all data will be deleted. Active subscriptions will be refunded.

Shutdown Details

  • The shutdown will occur by 2023-10-31. All user data will be permanently deleted following this date.
  • Collections purchases are already disabled; wallpapers downloaded remain on devices but are non-re-downloadable post-shutdown.
  • Active subscriptions will receive automatic pro-rated refunds. Users may request refunds earlier if necessary.

Development Challenges

The decision to shut down Panels follows difficulties in assembling a development team aligned with the app's vision, according to Marques Brownlee, the project's creator. Additionally, he plans to release the app's code as open-source under the Apache 2.0 license.

App Success and Future Availability

Launched in September 2024, Panels quickly climbed to the top of the Photos categories on Google's and Apple's app stores. It facilitated over two million wallpaper downloads. Despite the shutdown, future enthusiasts and developers may explore the app's functionalities when the code becomes available publicly.
