YouTube is testing a new in-app messaging feature for users in Ireland and Poland. The trial, available for users aged 18 and over, aims to simplify video sharing and encourage community building.
Messaging Features and Use
To initiate a chat, users can tap the notification bell on a video and choose 'Invite others'. Videos can also be shared via the Share button. All invite links expire within seven days. While messages are not entirely private, users can report or block conversations as they adhere to Community Guidelines.
Background and Goals
This is YouTube's second attempt at building a messaging platform, following a previous system used from 2017 to 2019. The current test looks to facilitate easier video discussions and improve user engagement by reducing dependence on third-party apps. YouTube is assessing user feedback before considering a broader rollout.
User Privacy Concerns
Messages may be reviewed for adherence to Community Guidelines, raising privacy considerations. Users retain the option to block or report any unwanted interactions.
