Google has updated its Gemini app to identify photos generated or altered using its AI technology, specifically those tagged with the invisible SynthID watermark. This feature allows users to quickly determine the provenance of images within the app itself.
Expanded Detection Capabilities
Previously, Google required a browser-based SynthID Detector for confirming AI-generated content. Now, the functionality is directly integrated within the Gemini app, offering faster, in-app verification. Gemini can identify AI-made images when they include Google's SynthID watermark, invisible to the naked eye.
Google intends to broaden the reach of SynthID detection. Future plans propose expansion beyond images to include audio, video, and search results. This is part of an ongoing effort to enhance traceability and accountability for AI-generated content.
Focus on Google Tools
Despite the advancement, the feature has limitations: it can only detect AI content made with Google's tools. Other companies' AI systems remain undetected by Gemini's current capabilities. Widespread adoption of SynthID by other platforms could enhance cross-web detection and effectiveness.
SynthID is part of Google's strategy to embed provenance data into digital content, using models like Nano Banana Pro across Google Ads, Vertex AI, and Gemini. These efforts aim to ensure transparency, combat misinformation, and preserve content authenticity online.
