Spotify Launches In-App Messaging for Music Sharing

27 Aug 2025

Spotify is enhancing its platform by rolling out an innovative in-app messaging feature, enabling users to share their favorite music, podcast, and audiobook recommendations directly with friends. This new feature is designed for both Free and Premium subscribers who are 16 years and older and is initially being launched in selected regions.

Seamless Sharing Experience

The introduction of in-app Messages is part of Spotify’s strategy to augment user experience by providing seamless music and content sharing capabilities. Accessible via mobile devices, this feature allows users to recommend their favorite tracks, podcasts, and audiobooks directly. Users can start this process by tapping the share icon in the Now Playing screen, selecting a friend, and then hitting send.

Recipients of these messages can easily accept message requests, react using emojis, and even text back, fostering a more engaging and personal experience. The communication effectively enhances the social aspect of Spotify, making it easier for users to express their musical tastes and preferences with those closest to them.

Expanding Connections

To manage connections, Spotify facilitates one-to-one messaging only with individuals with whom users have previously interacted. This includes friends and family members already sharing music through activities like Jams, Blends, or collaborative playlists, or those on a shared Family or Duo plan. Such thoughtful design ensures users enjoy meaningful conversations with their intimate circle without intrusions.

Robust Safety and Security

The company has emphasized its commitment to maintaining a safe environment within the platform. As part of its policy, Spotify's rules against illegal and harmful content extend to the new messaging system. Additionally, all communications are safeguarded through advanced encryption technology, making sure user data remains protected.

Spotify views this development as not just a tool for user engagement but also as an opportunity for artists, authors, and creators to widen their audiences. By facilitating direct recommendations, Spotify helps creators connect with potential new fans in a personal and impactful way.

Though currently limited to select geographical markets, Spotify plans to refine and scale the messaging feature to more users globally. The company is now closely studying user feedback to enhance the functionality and ensure a compelling experience for its diverse user base.
