Tajikistan has launched a state-backed messaging app, ORIZ, as part of efforts to achieve digital independence. This move follows a trend among nations seeking alternatives to US-based apps like WhatsApp.
ORIZ's Strategic Role
The Tajik communications service describes ORIZ as essential for independence. The app targets millions of Tajik migrants in Russia facing restrictions on Telegram and WhatsApp access. All ORIZ user data will be stored in Tajikistan, reflecting a focus on data sovereignty.
National Alternatives Emerge
India has also developed a local alternative through the software company Zoho, founded by Sridhar Vembu and Tony Thomas in 1996. Zoho's messaging platform offers end-to-end encryption, catering to Indian ministers. Meanwhile, Russia's Max app, released by VK, must now be on all devices sold domestically, with 18 million users registered since March.
