In Denmark, Made O'Meter, an app designed to help consumers boycott U.S. products, experienced a remarkable 1,400% increase in user activity. This surge occurred after President Donald Trump reignited discussions on acquiring Greenland during the World Economic Forum in Davos.
App Usage and Downloads
Available on iOS, Android, and desktop, Made O'Meter entered the list of most downloaded apps in Denmark. It achieved approximately 11,000 downloads on mobile platforms in January 2023, as reported by Appfigures. The app enables users to scan products to determine if they are linked to U.S. companies and offers alternatives without U.S. ties.
Ian Rosenfeldt, app creator and cofounder of the digital marketing agency InboundCPH, observed that users uploaded over 20,000 photos to the browser and mobile apps following Trump's statement. Rosenfeldt developed the app to support a Facebook group aimed at identifying and boycotting U.S. products.
Market Reactions and Motivations
Rosenfeldt explained that while Danes admire American people, there is discontent with the U.S. government's approach to Europe and Denmark, especially regarding Greenland. Though he does not believe a boycott alone will change U.S. policy, he hopes it will influence American product purchases.
The app remains free to use, despite the costs associated with its AI features. However, users are encouraged to donate to help sustain operations.
