YouTube Tests Redesigned Mobile UI for Select Users

02 Oct 2025

In a bid to enhance user experience, YouTube is experimenting with a fresh mobile user interface redesign, following its recent updates for Android TV. The new design affects several aspects of the app's layout, aiming to streamline the overall look and feel.

One of the most noticeable changes is the repositioning of the channel profile picture. In the new layout, the image has been moved to the right side of the video title, accompanying the updated display of the channel's identity. Instead of showcasing the full channel name, the new format highlights the channel's username, for instance, @jetlagthegame. This shift seeks to provide a cleaner, more streamlined visual presentation.

Another significant alteration involves the button arrangement beneath the video player. The notification bell has taken a prominent position at the front of the carousel. Meanwhile, text labels have been entirely removed from the buttons, leaving only icons for user interaction. This minimalistic approach might encourage quicker navigation, although it may require some getting used to for users accustomed to text guidance.

Changes to YouTube Shorts

YouTube Shorts, the platform’s popular short-form video service, has also undergone changes. The interface now features buttons that are not only smaller but also offer a smoother interaction. While this is aimed at creating a sleek appearance, initial feedback suggests that some users find these buttons too diminutive for comfort.

Currently, these changes are being tested with a select group of users. YouTube has opened the floor for feedback by encouraging users to share their thoughts and suggestions through the comments section. This initiative reflects YouTube's commitment to evolving its product based on user input.

As these updates undergo real-world testing, YouTube is likely to weigh the collected user feedback to determine potential adjustments or further rollouts. By maintaining an open dialog with its community, YouTube continues its strategy of iterative improvement, seeking a balance between aesthetics and functionality.
