Epic Games Store Mobile Launches for iOS in European Union

16 Aug 2024

The mobile version of the Epic Games Store that was announced earlier this year has finally arrived. Epic Games, the maker of Unreal Engine and Fortnite, unveiled and launched the third-party store on Android and iOS devices today. However, only users in the European Union can access the store on iOS.

This marks the first time that Apple users are able to play Fortnite on their devices since the game was famously removed from the App Store in 2020.

“We’re launching on iOS devices in the European Union thanks to the Digital Markets Act, but Apple is still blocking all other iOS users outside of Europe from accessing Fortnite and Epic Games Store for iOS,” said Epic in a press release. The company also accused Apple of creating roadblocks, such as canceling its iOS developer account and rejecting submissions.

Installation Procedures and Video Tutorials

The installation process for both Android and iOS devices involves several steps. Epic Games has provided video tutorials for both platforms to assist users.

“For now, the process of installing the Epic Games Store on iOS and Android is lengthy due to Apple and Google introducing intentionally poor-quality install experiences laden by multiple steps, confusing device settings, and scare screens,” Epic Games stated. The company is actively working to challenge these practices in court and with regulators to create a better store experience for everyone.

Current Offerings and Future Plans

The Epic Games Store currently features Fortnite, Rocket League Sideswipe, and the newly released Fall Guys for mobile. Epic Games plans to expand its offerings by adding games and apps from other developers to the store in the future.

In addition to the Epic Games Store, Epic’s games are also being added to the independent mobile store AltStore PAL today, with Aptoide’s iOS and ONE Store on Android set to receive them soon.

What's free on the Epic Games Store right now?

You can find the latest free games on the Epic Games Store by visiting their website or opening the Epic Games launcher. The store regularly updates its selection with new free titles every week. To see the current free games, check the 'Free Games' section on the store's homepage.

Why did Epic Games take Fortnite off the App Store?

Epic Games did not take Fortnite off the App Store voluntarily; it was removed by Apple. The removal occurred because Epic Games implemented a direct payment system within Fortnite, bypassing Apple's payment system and the 30% commission fee. This action violated Apple's App Store guidelines, leading to the game's removal and a subsequent legal battle between the two companies.
