BlackOps7 delivers an outstanding multiplayer experience, though its campaign struggles to leave a mark. The latest installment in the Call of Duty series, released on 2023-10-29, showcases both high and low points across its various modes.
Multiplayer Innovations
The multiplayer mode in BlackOps7 has been praised for its new Overload variant and an improved Omnimovement system, reminiscent of Black Ops 4's dynamic play. The enhanced wall jumping and expressive movements on maps like Blackheart, Exposure, and Toshin offer exciting gameplay. The new 20v20 Skirmish mode adds variety, though it may not be as fresh to seasoned players.
Overload involves strategic escort missions with an EMP device and feels more engaging than the replaced Control mode. Despite minor setbacks, such as invisible barriers on some maps, the overall quality makes multiplayer a must-try feature.
Campaign and Endgame Challenges
The campaign falls short, relying on psychological themes with numerous flashbacks that strain its narrative focus. Though cooperative play and weapon upgrades offer engagement, the storyline, centering on battling The Guild, often feels bogged down by previous traumas. Endgame's extraction-style mode aims to amplify PvE combat but can feel sluggish at lower levels.
The final attempt at fresh boss fights in the campaign brings some novelty; however, the conclusion and the eponymous Endgame mode leave much to be desired.
Zombies and Additional Modes
Zombies enthusiasts will find value in the familiar yet robust Ashes of the Damned map and returning modes like Survival and Dead Ops Arcade. While these are entertaining, they offer little innovation from past iterations. Novel elements like a zombified bear and vehicle loops provide fun challenges.
BlackOps7 offers content-rich experiences, with solid round-based Zombies modes, but fails to revolutionize entirely.
