Microsoft has significantly upgraded its Windows operating system, reducing the need for many third-party utilities by enhancing built-in tools for file compression, system cleanup, driver updates, screenshots, and antivirus protection.
File Compression and System Cleanup
Windows now supports creating ZIP files and opening various archive formats such as RAR, 7Z, and TAR. It can also handle password-protected archives, making third-party tools like WinRAR or 7-Zip largely unnecessary unless advanced features are required. Additionally, Windows includes Disk Cleanup and Storage Sense, which effectively remove junk files and system cache, reducing the need for external cleanup tools like CCleaner.
Driver Updates and Screenshot Tools
Windows Update now efficiently manages driver updates, listing less-critical updates in Optional Updates. This, combined with manufacturer utilities like Dell SupportAssist, makes third-party driver updaters redundant. The Snipping Tool has also been enhanced to include annotations, screen recording, OCR, and more, covering most screenshot needs without the need for apps like Greenshot.
Antivirus Protection
Microsoft Defender now offers comprehensive security features, including real-time protection and ransomware protection. It is rated comparably to third-party antivirus solutions, making additional antivirus software like McAfee or Norton unnecessary for most users, although some may still prefer specific third-party features.
