Microsoft Extends Support for Windows 10 with ESUs

24 Sep 2025

As Microsoft prepares to conclude official support for Windows 10 in October 2025, users are being urged to prepare for this transition. However, Microsoft is providing a temporary solution for those unable or unwilling to shift to Windows 11 immediately by offering Extended Security Updates (ESU) through October 13, 2026. This period offers additional time to migrate to a newer supported platform while maintaining essential security updates.

Enrollment Options and Process

Windows 10 users have several options to enroll in the ESU program. The choices include a $30 enrollment fee, redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or opting for a free enrollment by backing up PC settings and syncing with OneDrive. It is vital to ensure that your system runs the latest Windows 10 version and that you have administrative privileges before beginning this process.

To initiate enrollment, navigate to Settings, select Windows Update, and review your Update History. Look for messaging indicating "Windows 10 support ends in October 2025" along with an "Enroll in Extended Security Updates" link, which triggers the enrollment wizard. It is important to note that this wizard is gradually being made available, and Microsoft has acknowledged efforts to restore the program's availability in specific markets.

Considerations for Free Enrollment via OneDrive

If opting for the OneDrive synchronization option, be aware that Microsoft offers a default of only 5 GB of free storage. For some users, this may necessitate investing in a paid storage plan to accommodate all necessary data and settings backups.

Business Solutions and Extended Support

For businesses, the scenario is slightly different. Companies have the option to purchase up to three additional years of security updates. This pathway allows businesses to plan their transition to a new platform around their specific operation schedules, minimizing potential disruptions.

The ESU is specifically designed as a short-term solution. It enables both individual users and enterprises to maintain critical security protections during the period they evaluate and implement upgrades to newer systems.

While this window provides some breathing room, the emphasis remains on shifting towards a more modern and supported Windows version to ensure compatibility, security, and access to the latest features and system optimizations.
