Windows 10 Support Ending: Key Details for Businesses

03 Oct 2025

On October 14, 2025, official support for Windows 10 will conclude, marking a significant transition for users and businesses reliant on this operating system. Post this date, Microsoft will halt updates and patches, signaling substantial implications for organizations regarding device security and performance.

Yusuf Mehdi, the Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at Microsoft, confirmed that while Windows 10 will still operate, its prolonged use without essential updates will expose systems to potential vulnerabilities. Recognizing the essential role of security, Microsoft has committed to extending Defender Antivirus updates until October 2028, providing a measure of protection for those unable to transition immediately.

Extended Security Options

To support organizations reliant on Windows 10, Microsoft introduces the Extended Security Update (ESU) program, available starting October 15, 2025. This initiative includes three tiers, offering varied support to suit different user needs.

  • Free Windows Back and Microsoft Reward points for personal users.
  • A $30 annual subscription per device, targeting individual users who need continued support.
  • A business-tier option, costing around $61 per device annually, available for renewal up to three years, tailored for corporate environments managing multiple devices.

These ESU options aim to provide flexible solutions while encouraging users to migrate to more current systems, thus maintaining optimal security and functionality.

The Transition to Windows 11

Microsoft strongly recommends upgrading to Windows 11, highlighting notable advancements in security and efficiency. Data suggests that Windows 11 reduces security-related issues by 62% in comparison to its predecessor. Furthermore, the integration of Copilot+ enables workflow efficiencies of up to 50%, making it an appealing choice for productivity-focused businesses.

The shift not only improves protection but also streamlines operations, providing a robust platform for harnessing new technologies securely.

As enterprises prepare for the sunset of Windows 10, careful consideration of the available support options, balanced with the timing of an upgrade to Windows 11, will be essential in maintaining operational integrity and security.
