Microsoft Experiments with Redesigned Windows 11 Start Menu

14 Apr 2025

In a move to enhance user experience, Microsoft is currently testing a substantially redesigned Start menu in the beta builds of Windows 11. This redesign aims to provide users with a more comprehensive and efficient way to manage their applications.

Enhanced Control and Efficiency

One of the primary features of the new menu is its organization. The Start menu now prominently showcases two rows of pinned apps, allowing users to prioritize their most-used applications effectively. Beside this, a scrollable list of all installed applications gives users an overview of their available apps.

Furthermore, the option to display apps by category offers an innovative way to declutter the interface, making it especially beneficial for users who install numerous applications. This categorization not only simplifies app discovery but also maximizes available space.

Customizable Features

Another significant modification is the ability to toggle off the 'Recommended' section within the Start menu. Some users prefer a clean, unobstructed view of their complete list of applications, and this new option answers that need. By turning off the 'Recommended' section, users gain additional control over what they see, enhancing personalization.

Taskbar Improvements

In conjunction with the Start menu alterations, Microsoft is also experimenting with scaling taskbar icons in these new updates. This adjustment aims to streamline the user interface further, making the taskbar more adaptable to various screen sizes and resolutions, which could significantly improve productivity and user satisfaction.

These beta tests indicate Microsoft's commitment to refining and evolving Windows 11 to better meet user demands. The focus is on adaptability, efficiency, and greater user autonomy in navigating the Windows ecosystem. As feedback from these tests comes in, it will be interesting to see which features make it to the final build of Windows 11.
