West Virginia University (WVU) is taking decisive action to maintain the integrity and security of its digital infrastructure by removing all computers operating on the outdated Windows 10 system from its network by October 1. This measure affects all campuses, including the Health Sciences Center locations, and follows a significant two-year campaign urging departments to upgrade their devices to Windows 11.
Security Risks Prompt Urgent Updates
The initiative has been spearheaded by Information Technology Services, motivated by the urgent need to safeguard WVU data and services. With Microsoft ending support for Windows 10 this fall, devices running this system will no longer receive critical security updates, posing an unacceptable risk to network security. IT Services has strongly advised updates before the September 30 deadline, emphasizing the necessity of either upgrading to Windows 11 or replacing devices that cannot be updated.
As the deadline approaches, exemptions will be exceedingly rare. IT Services has underscored the importance of immediate action for those seeking exemptions, urging IT directors to make contact as soon as possible. The university aims to ensure that all systems are compliant and secure before the October cut-off.
- Deadline for upgrade or replacement: September 30
- Disconnection date: October 1
- Supported system: Windows 11
This move represents a strategic effort by WVU to enhance its cybersecurity posture amid evolving digital threats. By proactively addressing the risks associated with unsupported systems, the university is positioning itself at the forefront of data protection in academic environments.
