Windows 10 Support to Conclude, ESU Options Available

26 Sep 2025

With the cessation of support for Windows 10 scheduled for October 14, 2025, Microsoft has outlined the provisions for private users to extend their security update coverage. The company offers an Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, predominantly focusing on users within the European Economic Area (EEA), who can avail of ESU updates free for an additional year.

Options for Private Users in the EEA

The free option involves users signing in with a Microsoft account (MSA) on their devices, which, if used consistently, will furnish them with ESU updates at no extra cost until October 13, 2026. However, should the Microsoft account remain unused for up to 60 days, the updates are discontinued, and users will need to reactivate their coverage by signing in again.

  1. Users need to continuously use their Microsoft account without breaks exceeding 60 days to maintain the free ESU.
  2. Microsoft has waived the previous requirements such as the use of Windows Backup or redeeming Microsoft Rewards points in the EEA.

Additionally, there is a one-time payment option for ESU updates, which requires an initial sign-in with a Microsoft account. This method entails a single fee of $30, after which continuous MSA sign-in is not needed.

Outside EEA Provisions

Users outside the EEA face different rules. They can still access a year of ESU updates by synchronizing PC settings through Windows Backup with a Microsoft account or redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points. Alternatively, a universal one-time payment of $30 can cover up to 10 personal devices for continued security updates.

Business and Enterprise Considerations

For business clients, ESU is priced at $61 per device annually, with the possibility of renewals for up to three years. Devices operating in virtual environments such as Windows 365 will automatically benefit from free ESU without any registration.

It is imperative to note that the ESU only addresses critical and important security vulnerabilities. No new features or non-security updates will be administered during this extension.

Ongoing Support and Recommendations

Despite these measures, Microsoft strongly recommends users to transition to Windows 11 to ensure access to full support and enhancements. In contrast, Microsoft 365 Office applications will continue to be supported with security updates on Windows 10 devices until October 10, 2028, allowing some flexibility for those yet to upgrade.
