Windows 11 is undergoing a transformative period as Microsoft introduces a range of updates aimed at enhancing both system applications and user interface features. These updates are currently being tested across various Insider channels, including the Canary, Dev, and Beta versions, reflecting Microsoft's commitment to continuous improvement.
Enhanced Features for Everyday Use
The beloved Paint application sees significant enhancements, bringing it closer to a fully-fledged image editor. The introduction of the .paint file format allows users to save project files while preserving layers and edits. Additionally, a new opacity slider for Pencil and Brush tools offers greater flexibility for artistic projects. These updates are available in Paint version 11.2508.361.0 in the Canary and Dev channels.
Meanwhile, the Snipping Tool has been upgraded to version 11.2508.24.0, featuring a new Quick markup tool. This addition allows users to annotate screenshots immediately after capturing them, providing drawing, eraser, and shape tools that can be enabled directly from the capture toolbar or with the shortcut Ctrl+E.
AI-Powered Productivity Enhancements
Notepad is receiving a significant boost with the integration of artificial intelligence features, including Summarize, Write, and Prewrite, aimed at enhancing content productivity. These AI capabilities are powered by either an on-device model for users of Copilot+ PCs or a cloud-based model accessible via Microsoft 365, offering Notepad users new ways to interact with their content in version 11.2508.28.0 in the Canary and Dev channels.
The Click to Do feature is testing its language translation capabilities with a simple Win+Q shortcut. This function enables users to translate any selected on-screen text through the Copilot app. While currently available in the Dev and Beta channels, it's yet to be released to Insiders in the European Economic Area or China, and it remains uncertain whether translations occur locally or via the cloud.
Taskbar and System Tray Innovations
A notable update to the taskbar and system tray introduces a 'Share with Copilot' button, allowing users to swiftly engage with Microsoft's AI assistant. This feature is designed to facilitate quick interactions and analysis of on-screen content by utilizing Copilot Vision. However, there are concerns about unintentional activation due to its ease of access.
Other updates include gaming performance improvements visible in Canary builds, addressing both overlays and mixed-refresh-rate multi-monitor setups. Additionally, enhancements in the Dev and Beta channels include the Windows Spotlight desktop background gaining a 'Learn more about this background' functionality and an option to switch to the next background seamlessly. The Settings app also undergoes a slight revision, changing 'Email & accounts' to 'Your accounts' for clarity.
