Microsoft Addresses DRM Video Issues in Windows 11 Update

30 Sep 2025

Microsoft has announced a partial resolution to a persistent bug affecting DRM-protected video playback on Windows 11 24H2 systems. This issue, brought to light after the August 29, 2025 non-security preview update (KB5064081), triggered various playback interruptions, including freezes and black screens, particularly in Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital TV applications.

Facilitating Seamless Video Playback

The glitches primarily affected applications using the Enhanced Video Renderer with HDCP enforcement or DRM for digital audio, leading to copyright protection errors and frequent playback disruptions. Microsoft acknowledged the issue, emphasizing its impact on users who rely heavily on digital media for entertainment and professional purposes.

In an effort to mitigate these disruptions, Microsoft released a September 2025 Windows preview update. This update reportedly partially resolves the issue, allowing for improved video playback for some users. Microsoft urges all affected users to install the latest updates, highlighting that these updates provide important improvements and resolutions to ongoing issues.

Additional Systemwide Fixes

Alongside DRM-related concerns, Microsoft has addressed several other issues following the August updates. These included unexpected User Account Control prompts affecting non-admin users, compatibility challenges impacting both Windows 10 and Windows 11, and disruptions in security updates administered via Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).

Moreover, a notable bug leading to the malfunction of Windows reset and recovery operations on certain devices has also been fixed. Microsoft reassures users that ongoing monitoring and further updates will continue to enhance and stabilize the Windows operating systems, augmenting user experience and system reliability.

Persistent Challenges

Despite these advancements, Microsoft cautions that some applications implementing DRM for digital audio may continue to encounter problems. Ongoing feedback and insights from the global user community are emphasized as instrumental in driving further improvements.

By prioritizing these technological refinements, Microsoft remains committed to elevating the quality and reliability of their software solutions, particularly concerning media usage and copyright protection technologies.

For users navigating these complications, ensuring your system is updated with the latest patches and monitoring Microsoft's update trajectory is crucial for optimizing performance and maintaining a seamless digital experience.
