As the end of support for Windows 10 approaches, Microsoft is actively guiding users on how to navigate the transition. With support set to conclude on October 14, 2025, Windows 10 devices will cease to receive crucial security updates and technical support. While these devices will continue to function, the lack of updates will expose systems to potential vulnerabilities such as viruses, malware, and phishing threats, prompting Microsoft to recommend timely upgrades.
The tech giant is encouraging users to consider upgrading to Windows 11, citing benefits such as improved security, increased performance, and intuitive navigation. Windows 11 also offers built-in tools designed to enhance user experience. Users can check if their current PCs are eligible for a free upgrade by navigating to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and selecting 'Check for updates'.
Upgrade Options and Alternatives
Not all devices will meet the requirements to upgrade to Windows 11. For those users, Microsoft provides alternatives such as purchasing a new Windows 11 or Copilot+ PC, which can be more cost-effective in the long run. Another option is enrolling in the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. Personal users can subscribe for $30 annually, whereas businesses will incur a cost of $61 per device annually. This service allows coverage for up to three years beyond the end of support window, offering users a temporary security net as they plan their next steps.
To aid with transitions, Microsoft suggests utilizing Windows Backup for transferring files, photos, and settings to a new computer, ensuring a seamless migration of essential data. Digital lifestyle expert Mario Armstrong, in collaboration with Microsoft, emphasized the urgency for consumers to act soon, highlighting the increased compromise risks of unsupported systems.
The proactive approach, encompassing national media outreach efforts, signifies Microsoft's commitment to user security and satisfaction during this transition period. Media representatives, such as Karl Wayne of News Media Group, Inc., stress the importance of public awareness regarding these changes.
