The latest Windows 11 update, now available for Insiders, brings significant changes to the Start menu, aiming to enhance its usability and flexibility.
Start Menu Enhancements
The updated Start menu introduces a new interface that displays all apps on the main page. Users can switch between a category view and a grid view, the latter offering more horizontal space for app icons. The choice is remembered by the menu, adapting to various screen sizes by showing more pinned and recommended apps on larger displays. Additionally, a new phone pane allows users to access calls and messages from connected mobile devices.
File Explorer Improvements
The Home page in File Explorer now features a recommended files section, showing frequently used or recently added files for both Microsoft and local accounts. Users can turn off this feature if desired. File options like 'Open file location' and 'Ask Copilot' are more accessible, with current availability focused on personal accounts and expansion planned for work and school accounts.
Taskbar Tweaks
Taskbar updates include a color-coded battery icon showing charging status, and the option to display battery percentage in the System Tray. Users can now share app content directly with Copilot Vision via an icon on open apps. This feature and other minor enhancements contribute to an overall streamlined experience.
With these updates, Microsoft aims to address user concerns about the Start menu, offering flexibility and integrated experiences while considering further user feedback.
