Windows 11 Users Express Concerns Over New Account Integration

03 Jul 2024

IT admins and users are expressing dissatisfaction with a new feature in Windows 11 that integrates Microsoft account details into the Start menu. This change is being rolled out to all users with Windows 11 KB5039302, an optional update set to be enabled for everyone on July 9 along with Patch Tuesday updates.

Previously, users could access account settings by clicking on their profile picture or name in the Start menu. However, Microsoft is now introducing a new Microsoft account-powered experience, replacing the old accounts menu.

Changes in User Experience

After installing the latest Windows updates, users will notice that clicking on their profile now opens the “Microsoft experience” menu, displaying details such as Microsoft 365 subscription information.

The new design hides options like “Sign out and Switch user” under a three-dot menu, prompting users to link their Microsoft account if they have set up the PC with a local account. Additionally, users are encouraged to use OneDrive or set up a recovery email.

User Reactions

While Microsoft touts this update as a useful enhancement to the Start menu, users have voiced their opposition. Many argue that they do not want to see their Microsoft account details when trying to log out or switch users.

Some users feel that the integration is pushing them towards signing up for Microsoft 365, leading to frustration among those with domain accounts and existing subscriptions.

Adapting to the New Feature

Despite the backlash, it seems that the Microsoft account integration in the Start menu is here to stay, leaving users with no choice but to adapt to the new feature.
