Microsoft Releases New Windows 10 and 11 Updates for Enhanced Functionality

07 Aug 2024

Microsoft continues to enhance its Windows operating systems with a series of updates aimed at improving user experience and system functionality. Recently, the tech giant rolled out its non-security preview updates for both Windows 11 and Windows 10, designated as KB5040527 and KB5040525, respectively. Shortly thereafter, an additional update specifically for Windows 11 version 24H2, known as the 2024 update, was quietly introduced under the identifier KB5040529, tailored for Copilot+ PCs.

Recent Developments in Windows Updates

In a recent observation by Neowin, it was noted that Microsoft has also initiated another update for both Windows 10 and 11, labeled KB5001716. This particular update has triggered the forced installation of newer Windows feature updates, ensuring users have access to the latest enhancements.

Moreover, Microsoft has released the Safe OS Dynamic Update for Windows 11 24H2, focusing on recovery improvements. This update, identified as KB5041979, is designed to enhance the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), which assists users in troubleshooting booting issues. According to Microsoft, this update is aimed at refining the recovery capabilities within Windows 11 version 24H2.

This update makes improvements to the Windows recovery environment in Windows 11, version 24H2.

In a detailed blog post on the Techcommunity platform, Microsoft elaborated on the concept of Dynamic Updates for Windows 10. These updates encompass various components and functionalities, including fixes to Setup.exe binaries and SafeOS updates for the Windows Recovery Environment. The process begins as soon as a Windows 10 feature update is initiated, whether through media or a Windows Update service-connected environment.

As soon as a Windows 10 feature update initiates, Dynamic Update is one of the first steps invoked. Windows 10 Setup reaches out to an Internet-facing URL hosted by Microsoft to fetch Dynamic Update content, then applies those updates to your OS installation media.

The content acquired through Dynamic Updates includes:

  • Setup Updates: Fixes to Setup binaries or any files that Setup uses for feature updates.
  • Safe OS Updates: Fixes for the “safe OS” that are used to update Windows recovery environment (WinRE).
  • Servicing Stack Updates: Fixes necessary to address the Windows 10 servicing stack issue, required to complete the feature update.
  • Latest Cumulative Update: Installs the latest cumulative quality update.
  • Driver Updates: Latest versions of applicable drivers published by manufacturers into Windows Update, specifically targeted for Dynamic Update.

Additionally, these dynamic updates ensure that Language Pack (LP) and Features on Demand (FODs) content are preserved during the upgrade process. While these are not updates to LPs and FODs, they are reacquisitions to guarantee that users retain these elements once the update is complete.

It is important to note that these dynamic updates are not automatically pushed through Windows Update; instead, they are available for manual download from the Windows Update Catalog website, accessible for both Arm64 and AMD64 Copilot+ PCs.
