Microsoft Tightens Windows 11 Hardware Requirements in Latest Insider Build

19 Aug 2024

Changes in the Latest Build

Microsoft has taken a significant step in its ongoing efforts to enforce hardware requirements for Windows 11 by addressing a popular workaround that allowed users to bypass these stipulations. This change was quietly introduced in the latest Windows Insider build 27686, which also brought several enhancements, including updates to the Windows Sandbox Client preview and an increase in FAT32 formatting capacity from 32 GB to a substantial 2 TB.

Despite the positive updates, the documentation accompanying this build did not explicitly mention the discontinuation of a workaround that had been widely utilized. Users had been leveraging the “setup.exe /product server” method to circumvent Microsoft’s hardware checks. However, reports from users, including insights from X user @TheBobPony, indicate that this workaround is no longer functional in the latest build.

Inquiries made by The Register to Microsoft regarding the implications of this change have yet to receive a response. While the workaround remains operational in the Windows 24H2 update, it appears that the hardware check has been reinstated in the Canary channel build 27686. This channel is known for showcasing the most cutting-edge developments in Windows, leading to speculation that the change could either be a bug or a corrective measure addressing a previous loophole that allowed the desktop installer to mimic server installation criteria.

The hardware requirements for Windows Server 2025 are notably less stringent than those for the desktop version of Windows 11. Microsoft has clarified that a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip is necessary for certain features, but the absence of this chip does not prevent Windows Server 2025 from being installed. This distinction previously enabled users to install Windows 11 on non-compliant hardware by using server-type checks.

With the introduction of build 27686, users are now faced with the need to ensure their hardware meets the necessary specifications or to seek alternative workarounds, a task that may prove cumbersome. This workaround had been a beacon for those eager to transition to Windows 11, particularly for individuals frustrated by the seemingly arbitrary hardware requirements set forth by Microsoft. These requirements include:

  • A GHz or faster processor with two or more cores on a compatible 64-bit CPU
  • 4GB of RAM
  • A storage device of 64GB or larger
  • TPM version 2
  • UEFI and Secure Boot capability

As the clock ticks down to the end of support for most versions of Windows 10 in 14 months, Windows 11 continues to lag behind its predecessor, although the gap is gradually narrowing. The removal of this loophole signals a more serious approach from Microsoft regarding its hardware requirements, reinforcing the company’s commitment to a more standardized user experience.
