Microsoft Urges Transition to Windows 11 as Windows 10 Support Ends in 2025

Windows 11 Gains Traction in Gaming

Microsoft's push for users to transition to Windows 11 is becoming increasingly evident as the deadline for free support of Windows 10 approaches. With October 2025 on the horizon, many users are finally embracing the latest operating system. Recent data from Stat Counter, as reported by Express.co.uk, indicates a notable uptick in Windows 11 adoption, while Windows 10 usage is steadily declining.

In a significant development, new statistics from Steam reveal that Windows 11 has now overtaken previous versions to become the most popular gaming platform. Over the past month, Windows 11’s user base has surged by nearly 4 percent, achieving a commanding 49.17 percent share compared to Windows 10’s 47.09 percent. This milestone suggests that the transition away from Windows 10 is gaining momentum.

With just over a year remaining until support for Windows 10 officially ends, Microsoft remains unfazed by the substantial number of users still on the older operating system. Aaron Woodman, Vice President of Windows Marketing at Microsoft, expressed confidence in the migration process, stating, “It doesn’t surprise me. We had a bunch of customers on Windows 7 even after we launched Windows 10, until the end of support date for Windows 7. We’re actually ahead of the Windows 7 to Windows 10 transition.”

For those who have yet to make the switch, it’s important to note that continuing to use Windows 10 could pose security risks as the deadline approaches. After October 2025, machines running Windows 10 will no longer receive essential updates and patches designed to maintain system security. Microsoft has announced that extended support will be available, albeit at a cost of £48 per year. However, this service is currently being offered primarily to business enterprises rather than home users.

“While we strongly recommend moving to Windows 11, we understand there are circumstances that could prevent you from replacing Windows 10 devices before the EOS date. Therefore, Microsoft will offer Extended Security Updates,” confirmed Jason Leznek from Microsoft last December.
