Microsoft is setting the stage for a transformative update to Windows 11, anticipated in September, as the newest Release Preview build indicates. This update promises enhancements that will appeal to both casual users and those with Copilot+ PCs.
Enhancements Across the Board
The update is centered around offering system-wide improvements, which include a refined Windows Search. Users will benefit from better photo display in a grid view and notifications when files are still being indexed, ensuring that search results are not prematurely deemed incomplete. Customizable and repositionable widgets arrive on the lock screen, now including third-party options and available to a global audience.
The Start menu sees considerable changes too, allowing for greater customization to focus more on pinned apps by removing the Recommended area. Meanwhile, the Task Manager is updated to feature consistent CPU workload metrics across all pages, and the Taskbar calendar flyout reintroduces the ability to display seconds.
Copilot+ Exclusive Features
Owners of Copilot+ PCs will access a newly redesigned Windows Hello interface, with modernized settings and permission dialogs. These changes include a new landing page for Recall, which highlights recent snapshots and workflows, and moves the timeline to its own page.
Furthermore, File Explorer is set to incorporate AI-driven Actions into its context menu, making it easier than ever for users to tackle tasks involving images and documents. The AI Settings agent, previously exclusive to Snapdragon Copilot+ PCs, will now be available on Intel and AMD machines as well.
Broader UI and AI Enhancements
UI modernizations touch several elements of the operating system. In alignment with the growing trend, broader support for dark mode is being integrated into File Explorer, enhancing visual comfort and appeal. Users may also notice hints of AI companions embedded within the Taskbar, further personalizing and streamlining their interaction with Windows 11.
While the 25H2 version provides a shared platform and servicing stack with 24H2, Microsoft hints at potential releases later in October or November with additional features. Users can expect these enhancements to further elevate the Windows 11 experience, balancing productivity with personalized user interfaces.
