Microsoft Addresses Issues From Recent Windows Updates

26 Aug 2025

Recent Windows updates have drawn attention from users and tech enthusiasts alike due to a series of disruptions affecting both the recovery process and SSD functionality across various systems. With technology at the heart of modern business operations, frequent and reliable updates are essential.

Unraveling the Recovery Glitch

August's updates for Windows 10 and Windows 11 unveiled a vexing issue regarding the built-in reset and recovery features. This issue was especially troublesome for users attempting to restore their computers to factory settings on Windows 11 23H2, 22H2 and Windows 10 22H2. The recovery failed without any warning or error message, leaving many users in the dark. Fortunately, Microsoft addressed this swiftly by releasing update KB5066189 within a day of the problem surfacing on August 18.

SSD Challenges Under Scrutiny

A separate conundrum has emerged with the rollout of Windows 11 24H2, which has been causing some SSDs to vanish, particularly during substantial data transfers, such as installing large software or games. The situation becomes more acute when users try transferring data exceeding 50 GB on drives that are more than 60% filled.

  • While most affected SSDs reappeared following a system reboot, there have been instances where certain models, notably the Western Digital SA510 2TB, did not return.
  • Microsoft has confirmed its investigation into these reports, indicating their commitment to resolving the inconvenience caused to users.
  • Phison, a prominent SSD controller manufacturer, has acknowledged the issue and is collaborating with Microsoft to trace the root causes and devise appropriate solutions.

As users continue to rely heavily on their devices for both personal and professional needs, timely and effective communication from giants like Microsoft is paramount. Windows updates are generally anticipated with eagerness for their security patches and feature additions, but ensuring these updates do not hinder the functionality of systems remains crucial. Communication from Microsoft regarding these updates and suggesting interim solutions would be beneficial in maintaining user trust and minimizing disruption to work flows.
