OOBE Enhances Windows Updates for Enterprises and Schools

27 Aug 2025

Starting in September 2025, Windows 11 devices will introduce a revamped update mechanism integrated with the Out of Box Experience (OOBE). The software update enhancement marks a key development for Microsoft Entra joined and hybrid joined devices, where applicable updates will be applied automatically during the OOBE phase.

Streamlining the Update Process

This new functionality allows Windows to automatically check for and install necessary quality updates on the final OOBE page, eliminating the need for users to perform updates after their initial sign-in. The update implementation is specifically tailored for devices running Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, Education, or SE editions and requires management through Microsoft Intune.

For the OOBE update experience to take effect, devices must have received the August 2025 OOBE zero-day patch or been imaged with the June 2025 Windows non-security update. This approach aims to streamline the setup process for organizational devices, enhancing both security and user experience from the outset.

Benefits for IT Management

As Microsoft Product Manager Victoria Wang notes, integrating this feature with solutions like Windows Autopilot and Microsoft Intune—or suitable alternative management solutions—empowers administrators to maintain seamless control over update behaviors during device provisioning. This ensures alignment with organizational security and compliance requirements while alleviating burdens on IT teams.

By delivering state-of-the-art security and quality updates during the OOBE phase, organizations can safeguard against vulnerabilities from day one. This pre-installed protection not only adheres to compliance standards but also enhances operational efficiencies by reducing unnecessary post-deployment tasks traditionally required from IT personnel.

This advancement signifies a shift from the previous practice, where end users needed to install updates post-device reception. For enterprises and educational institutions, this new OOBE update procedure translates into a more streamlined and secure environment, improving productivity and user satisfaction from the very first use of the device.
