Getting Started with Windows 11 2025 Update

Microsoft is opening its doors to early adopters by releasing the Windows 11 2025 feature update, also known as version 25H2, as a preview through the Windows Insider Program. This update can be accessed by devices running the 24H2 update via a specialized enablement package, offering a seamless path for those interested in testing the latest features and improvements. However, it's crucial to remember that this is a preview build and still in the testing phase.

Steps to Access Windows 11 Version 25H2 Early

To embark on this journey, users must first enroll their PCs in the Release Preview channel. Begin by opening the Settings app and navigating to Windows Update. From there, select Windows Insider Program and click on Get started. After linking your Microsoft account, choose Release Preview under Pick your Insider settings, accept the terms, and restart your computer.

Post-reboot, return to Settings > Windows Update and ensure the Get the latest updates as soon as they're available option is enabled. You may need to check for updates to download any pending 24H2 updates, and restart if prompted. Finally, return to Windows Update and click Download & install to apply the 25H2 enablement package. Another restart will likely be required, after which you can verify the update by going to Settings > System > About. The version should read "25H2" under Windows specifications.

Ensuring a Smooth Transition

Once the update is installed, users can choose to unenroll their devices from the Release Preview channel. This can be done by navigating again to Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program, clicking Stop getting preview builds, and enabling the option to Unenroll this device when the next version of Windows releases. This proactive step will ensure that when the 25H2 update becomes officially available, the device will automatically transition to the Stable Channel, allowing it to continue receiving important updates during the support period, all without the need to reinstall Windows.

A Word of Caution

Given that the 25H2 update is still in testing, it's advised to proceed with caution. Ensure you have a complete backup of your data and, if possible, perform the installation on a spare or non-primary device. This precaution helps prevent potential data loss or disruptions. Should any issues arise post-update, users can conveniently use their backup to roll back or restore to a previous version of the OS.
