Borderlands 4's Combat Impresses Amid Gameplay Concerns

04 Sep 2025

At the recent Gamescom event, Borderlands 4 made a striking impression with its refined combat systems, though not without concerns regarding gameplay variety. Gearbox demonstrates a masterful evolution of its signature mechanics, showcasing a sophisticated blend of guns and abilities that are poised to captivate both veteran players and newcomers. During a hands-on session with the Vault of Inceptus, individuals were introduced to an arsenal featuring SMGs, assault rifles, shotguns, LMGs, pistols, and an innovative disk launcher.

The firearm experience was further enhanced by a plethora of switchable modifiers, allowing for real-time adjustments to fire rate and the introduction of elemental effects like scorching or irradiation. These flexible options added a dynamic layer to the traditional Borderlands formula, providing players with countless strategies to explore. Despite the occasional hindrance posed by sluggish reload times, these minor disruptions are expected to be mitigated through strategic choices in attachments and character abilities.

Exploring New Abilities

Playing as the viking-inspired character Amon, participants dived into the Cybernetics skill tree, unlocking the high-stakes Crucible ability; this dual-wielding power utilizes both a fire ax and an ice ax, each tied to separate triggers. This feature allowed for a high-damage execution with a remarkably short cooldown period, showcasing the potential within the game’s elaborate skill system.

Initial impressions of the three distinct skill trees may appear daunting, filled with detailed statistics and descriptions. However, these systems are expected to enable players to significantly enhance their abilities—reducing cooldown times, enhancing damage, boosting critical hit chances, and infusing attacks with elemental properties.

An intriguing shift sees healing resources transition from static ground pickups to active, player-controlled items. Although providing greater strategic depth, the design choice introduces an additional layer of management, potentially disrupting overall fluidity, particularly on controllers where they are mapped to the d-pad.

Challenging Ventures in the Primordial Vault

Despite these triumphs in combat innovation, the gameplay loop encountered within the Primordial Vault raises some eyebrows. The activity, characterized by a repetitive sequence of enemy waves and reminiscent of a linear rocky pass, concluded with a formidable boss battle but lacked diversity in its flow.

The difficulty posed by robust enemies and their ambiguous attack patterns suggested a challenge that bordered on punishing, potentially magnified by the solitary nature of the demo experience. Anticipations are high that the final game release will elevate its adventurous aspects beyond these initial impressions, offering richer and more varied content to differentiate the dungeons from repetitive loot opportunities.

As the countdown to Borderlands 4's anticipated release continues, industry enthusiasts remain optimistic. They hope that Gearbox's enhanced combat mechanics won't be overshadowed by unremarkable dungeon design, and that the full title will deliver an enriching and dynamic gameplay experience for its diverse fanbase.
