Epic Games has announced that Fortnite will return to Android devices and the Google Play Store worldwide after Google changed how apps and payments work on the platform. The move ends a long-running dispute between Epic Games and Google. In a post on X, Epic founder and CEO Tim Sweeney thanked Google: “Google is opening up Android all the way with robust support for competing stores, competing payments, and a better deal for all developers. So, we've settled all of our disputes worldwide. THANKS GOOGLE!” He later confirmed Fortnite will return to Google Play Store worldwide soon and said installation on Android will become easier later in 2026. Epic’s blog said the updates mark a shift toward greater openness on Android, allowing more competition among app stores and giving developers more control over payments. Epic and Google have submitted a proposal to the US District Court to finalize similar changes in the United States. Google announced several Play Store updates: more billing options for developers, lower fees, and a Registered App Stores program to make installing alternative stores easier. Developers can use their own payment systems inside apps alongside Google Play billing or direct users to make purchases outside apps. Under the new model, developers using Google Play’s billing system in regions including the US, UK and EEA will pay a 5% billing rate, with in-app service fees reduced to 20% for new installs and 15% for some developers under incentive programs. Rollout of fee changes will begin in the US, UK and EEA by June 30, with Australia by September 30, Japan and Korea by December 31, and a global rollout expected by September 2027. Epic said it will continue investing in the Epic Games Store for Android alongside Windows and Mac to support developers and gamers.
