BitLocker Recovery Prompt Issue in Windows Updates

08 Nov 2025

Microsoft's October 2025 security update is causing unexpected BitLocker recovery prompts on some devices running Windows 10 and 11. Affected systems, primarily Intel-based devices supporting Connected Standby, may boot into BitLocker recovery unexpectedly.

System Impact and Affected Versions

The issue impacts Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2, and Windows 10 version 22H2. BitLocker, which encrypts drive contents, requires a recovery key if the system detects hardware, firmware, or boot configuration changes. Following these prompts, devices require a recovery key to continue booting.

Resolution and User Guidance

Microsoft has released a fix for this problem. Administrators must manually implement it using the Known Issue Rollback group policy for full resolution. It is advised that enterprise customers reach out directly to Microsoft support for assistance. For individual consumers, retrieving the recovery key through a Microsoft account is highly recommended to avoid data loss.
